Jochen Mühlenbrink

Born in Germany in 1980.  Studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and graduated as a master student of Markus Lüpertz.  "Windows", "Mirrors", and "Tapes" are three recurring motifs in his oeuvre. Seemingly quotidian motifs, naturalistic in their painterly execution,  almost obscure the fact at first glance that they are underpinned by subtle image strategies. The proposition is that the experience that in the "deception/illusion" lies a truth, allowing us as a viewer to have the fundamental experience of "reception" and "realization" in scenes of casual ordinariness.

Window Paintings

From the series of the Window Paintings, which are cunningly utilizing painting to create an effective trompe l‘oeil illusion of a steamy window. Mixing two disparate types of visuals; the blurry color fields against sharply rendered sections, the Düsseldorf-based artist is easily recreating the familiar sight that is instantaneously playing with our perception, inviting us to both „recognize“ the landscape in the distance, but also to „read“ the finger drawn image in the front. In the end, these captivating works are poetic tribute to the beautiful language of painting and its ability to transform the most mundane sights into a captivating, intriguing visuals.
